Totoro Baby Hat

Size 0-3 months

Materials:

4-ply worsted weight cotton yarn (I used Sugar’n Cream)

H (5 mm) Hook

Yarn Needle

2 Buttons

 Stitches:

ch - chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sc dec – single crochet decrease

sl st – slip stitch

Directions

Hat

Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 3, dc 10 in 2^nd ch from hook, pull ring tight, join to 1^st dc with sl st. (10 dc)

Rnd 2: ch 3, 2 dc in each dc around. Join to top of ch-3 with a sl st. (20 dc)

Rnd 3: ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around. Join to top of ch-3. (30 dc)

Rnd 4: ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, repeat from *around. Join to top of ch-3. (40 dc)

Rnd 5: ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 7 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top pf ch-3.
Rnd 6-8: ch 3, dc evenly around, sl st to join. Do not end off.

First Earflap

ch 1

rows 1-2: sc 10, ch 1, turn. (10 sc)

row 3: sc dec over first 2 sc. Sc in next 6 sc. Sc dec over last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

row 4: sc 8, ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

row 5: sc dec over first 2sc. Sc in next 4 sc. Sc dec over last 2 sc. Ch 1,turn. (6 sc)

row 6: sc 6, ch 1, turn. (6 sc)

row 7: sc dec, sc in next 2 sc, sc dec, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

row 8: 2 sc dec, ch 1, turn. (2 sc)

row 9: sc dec, end off. (1 sc)

Second Earflap

Attach yarn to approx. the 15^th stitch from the first earflap on the opposite side (or halfway). Repeat the steps for  the 1^st earflap.

Eyes (make 2)

with white

Rnd 1: magic ring, ch 3, 10 dc in 2^nd ch from hook, pull tight, join to first dc with a sl st. (10 dc)

Rnd 2: ch 3, 2 dc I each dc around. End off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (20 dc)

Ears (Make 2)

row 1: ch 5, sc in 2^nd ch from hook and in each rem ch. Ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

row 2: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

row 3: 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc. ch 1, turn. (6 sc)

row 4: sc dec, sc in next 2 sc, sc dec, ch 1, turn.(4 sc)

row 5: sc dec 2 times, ch 1, turn. (2 sc)

row 6: sc dec. Now sc all the way around the outside of the ear, adding an extra sc in the middle of each side and at the bottom corners for a total of 4 extra sc added.

Nose

row 1: ch 2, 4 dc in 2^nd ch from hook. Join to 1^st ch with a sl st. End off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

With white, attach yarn anywhere on base of hat and sc all the way around the bottom of the hat and earflaps.

With a yarn needle, sew on the eyes, ears and nose where you like. Sew black buttons to the center of the eyes. Weave in all loose ends.
